Recently I was made aware of an awesome charity run by Matt DiRito of Pop Evil. The purpose of his charity is to help families with ill children get to and from their hospital visits/treatments in a comforting surrounding. After reading what I considered his mission statement I understood exactly what he was talking about.
The gas alone can wreck a budget and what if your car breaks down? Maybe your out of PTO at work? How do you get your child to the treatment they need? Click To TweetWe all know that medical bills have become the ruination of many a family. Just the medical bills alone could cause a family to have to file bankruptcy, lose their home and cars and often caregivers can lose their jobs because of having to take time off. There are other side effects that most people don’t think about though. What if the hospital you need to take your child to is in another city, or worse state. The gas alone can wreck a budget and what if your car breaks down? Maybe your out of PTO at work? How do you get your child to the treatment they need?
Enter Matt’s charity Star Treatments. The idea is wonderful to say the least. What Matt is trying to do is make sure every child that needs care can get to it by offering a bus to take them and their families where they need to go. And it’s not just a ride my friends, this really is star treatment offering a tour style bus for these ill children. They have every thing they need on the bus; healthy snacks, a bathroom and beds for the kiddo’s to lay down on if they have a bad reaction to treatments. And all the while their care givers are available to tend to their child’s needs. This also allows other family members to help get the kids to and from treatments.
I can’t put into words how wonderful this charity is. I’ve seen friends struggle trying to get their kids to a hospital 200 miles away from home. These are families that are in crisis and hurting, any thing you can do to ease their lives is a blessed thing. I happen to agree with Matt in the idea that celebrities have a unique opportunity to use their fame to bring about positive change. Maybe they have a moral responsibility to help others and maybe they don’t. That is an argument for another day. What I will say is celebs that help those in need are celebs I always feel more connected to and increased respect for.
