More Than Most – You’re Not Alone

Wow, this song is amazing. I love the lyrics for this song, it’s dark but very relatable. The vocalist was able to connect with the story so well, you can hear it in his voice with every word. The message that you’re not alone is one I think everyone needs to hear from time to time. I used to think that was an age thing but fall on some hard times and a positive message is something you need in your world. The music is brilliantly composed and arranged. The drums, bass and guitar work in perfect harmony with no one pulling all the focus. I hear a lot of music but this one a perfect storm of vocals and music.

I know I sound pretty fan girl already and I’ll take that. This song was a gut punch from the first note for me.  Maybe I needed a moment of rocking positivity but this song will be on my server and my phone by days end. I’m also hoping that I’ll be able to hook up with these guys at some time to watch them rock an arena.

Who They Are:
‘More Than Most’ began life following the disbandment of Leandro Leonardi (guitar) and Mokhtar Saib’s (bass guitar) previous project ‘Outsiders’ in early 2013. The vision was simple – Create meaningful, relatable music, with the energy and power to excite live audiences, but also the subtle detail and atmosphere to enjoy at home.

A few bedroom demo tracks later – they started hunting for members to complete the lineup of the project and take it forward to the next stage.

The first port of call in this department was Daniel Allan (guitar), who had worked with both Leandro and Mokhtar in a project a couple of years earlier. They knew Daniel would share the same vision for the project, and having known each other for several years, together they would form the core of ‘More Than Most’.

It was soon after this that Izzy Stylez (vocals) came along. He laid down some vocals for one of the demos and the first complete More Than Most song was born! With intelligent, thought provoking lyrics and a general theme of positivity through adversity, his vocal and lyrical style counter-balanced the dark atmospheric energy that the songs convey – complimenting and even improving on the original vision for the project. It’s safe to say Izzy fit right in with the dynamic of the band on both a musical and personal level.

By this point, it was summer 2013. Over the coming months, the band had continued to write, with lyrics for two other demos finished, and rehearsals with a new drummer underway. A recording studio session was also booked for January 2014 to record two of the demo tracks. It seemed a no brainer to work with Justin Hill. His portfolio within the genre speaks for itself, whilst Izzy had worked with him before in his previous project ‘Gold Skies Ahead’.

At this point, the project hit a minor snag. Unfortunately, the drummer could not commit long-term, and had to leave in October 2013 due to personal reasons. While this was a stumbling block, auditions continued to find a new drummer, and the band were as motivated as ever to prepare for the recording session and beyond.

With January fast approaching, and the permanent drummer position still not filled, Leandro called upon a long-time drummer contact – Kirk Brandham – to help out. One (very long) rehearsal later – More Than Most were ready to hit the studio and following a fantastic week in the studio with Justin Hill at the helm, the band came away with their first two songs!
More Than Most continued to work with Kirk Brandham on their debut music video for “Remember Who You Are” and in February 2014 published this on Youtube.

The next step was to continue the hunt for a permanent drummer and after a spate of auditions, they were approached by a very enthusiastic and highly talented Cole Solem from Duluth, Minnesota who had seen the video and loved it. After a drum cover of the track, the band’s interest were peaked and Cole showed his dedication by travelling all the way from the USA just to audition! The audition was very successful and the lineup of More Than Most was complete.

Sauerkraut Sandwich – Cats are cooler than Dogs

I don’t get a chance to review a lot of comedic songs, so when I stumble upon one I’m always exceedingly happy. The Sauerkraut Sandwich song slays me.  I had to go over it a couple of time because the first viewing I was just so absorbed with the video. The song has a pretty simple music line that’s seriously background noise when it comes right down to it. Those lyrics and the delivery is what this song is all about. The title doesn’t lie, it’s all about how cats are cooler than dogs. For some reason I kept thinking of some of the Bloodhound Gang music listening to this song.

Yes, I want this song! These guys are killing me, I laugh every time I play it. I would put this on a playlist with some Weird Al, Bloodhound Gang, that one song by The Darkness (you know the one I mean) roll it up and get ready to laugh my freaking ass off.

Ascending Souls – I’m Not Going

Loving this intro guys! The drums along with that guitar is amazing, especially with those cymbals. Those vocals are so rough and just plain cool it’s killing me. This song damn near abuses you but you can’t help but want more. You have some clean vocals and there are some spots with awesome screaming vocals. Dominic Steele has an amazing command over his vocals. I mean dayum! The guitar work is stellar hands down some of the best I’ve heard in a while. I am in total music love with some of Dominic’s riffs. Gabe’s bass work is the glue that is holding these three men down. Love, love it. Billy’s drum work is a total frontal assault on your senses with a penchant for that cymbal.

I dug this track from the first second it started. These guys are hella talented. I love the fact that they have managed to develop such a full round sound with just 3 guys. There are moments when I get an old school Metallica vibe and then there’s times where I swear I’m hearing Zakk Wylde in that guitar line. I can’t tell you how much I want this on my server and my phone. I’m just going to create a list of heavy drum and guitar songs and add this one. That list is going to kick your ass up and down town. I’m thinking some Mudvayne, Metallica, Megadeath, Five Finger Death Punch and more!

V૯૨ઽષઽ Vઽ. V૯૨ઽ૯ઽ – COSMONAUT

I’m getting this really dark vibe from this song that I really love. This guy’s voice is capable of being sinister and sexy all at the same time. It’s the something Jared Leto has in 30 Seconds to Mars has going for him. I like is when singers ride that edge. Maybe it’s me but that is some hot vocal styling right there. The guitar work matches the skill of the vocalist lick for lick. The drum line is a steady in your face hard rock beat that will get you moving. I thought there were some rather mind bending music moments in this track.

I’m not sure why, but writing this review was a bit like pulling teeth. I like the track and I would love to have it on my phone. It’s definitely worthy of something better than my lame-o laptop speakers I’m having to use right now. I can see myself flying down the highway rocking this tune hella loud. So I have no idea why I had such a hard time getting the review done. Perhaps it’s because I was busy just listening to the song that I wasn’t really working up the review in my head like I normally do. Either way this was an excellent track that just got better with every listen. The vocals are interesting, sexy and slightly threatening. The guitarist has a great opportunity to show off his skills without over taking the song. I love the always on nature of the drum line. It’s a perfect fit for this song.

Who They Are:
There is something alive in the music of Versus Vs. Verses. Drawing upon influences like Deftones and Chevelle, their songs continue to evolve and surprise while often unearthing strange sounds. Applying their deep-rooted impressions from hard rock, Versus Vs. Verses uses imagination and composition to tell a story, making every song an attempt at invention and discovery.

The River Chickens – First Date Fracture

I don’t know what I was expecting from a band called The River Chickens, but this wasn’t it. What we have here is a smooth as butter jam. It’s got that sexy tempo that makes you want to get down if you know what I mean. I love the full round sound they are giving me with the guitar. We have some hella Santana like guitar work that would be a reason by itself to love the song.  The vocalist has an awesome range including a rather bad ass falsetto. I caught that one particular high note.

Can I have this one now please? I’ve been on this whole 70’s thing the last week or so and I want to put this on a list with Santana, Sanford and Townsend (don’t know em? Look that band up) and Atlanta Rhythm Section. OMG that would be such an awesome list. I would have to put that on my phone so I could take it with me wherever I went.

Lonnieclaire – New Mexico Gold

I wish I could have found a better copy of this song. I really liked what I heard but some of it was a bit hard to make out. The bill themselves as a garage band and I can see why. There is a relaxed nature to this song that makes me think back to when I was hanging out with garage bands on the daily. This song reminds me a lot of some old Alice Cooper from way back in the day. It’s got a slow temp with minimal drum work. It relies heavily on the guitar line to carry the music of this track. The vocals are killing me. They are some serious 70’s style and totally awesome. Now some of that could be because of the recording.

I plan to see out more of their music because this one has me intrigued. I’m not sure where I would put this on a playlist but I’m thinking some of my funky psychedelic 70’s stuff might be a good fit. Some Alice of course, Zappa maybe and oddly enough The Doors.  I had a lot of fun listening to this jam, I hope the rest are as much fun!

Billy Brown – Jolene

I am a huge fan of the original song by Dolly Parton. It’s a heartbreaking song that when done right is gut wrenching. Billy’s take on this classic country song is amazing. He was able to take this and turn it into a third person story that in some ways makes it a harder story to listen to. The way he pleads with Jolene on “her” behalf is amazing. His vocals work the story in all new ways. There are some amazing vocal breaks. I’ve always loved the simple guitar line to this song. Billy did that justice as well keeping it simple and opting to not modify the guitar line.

I really liked his vocals enough to wanna check out more of this cats work. I opted to review this song because I loved it so much, but I will admit that it’s harder some times to review an artist through a cover. I do feel like I got to know him through this song because of it’s personal nature. I would happily put this on a playlist with my other older country songs oh and the Linda Ronstadt version of ‘I Will Always Love You’

David R. Guitard – Wasted Away

I’m not really sure what to say about this song. I feel a lot of influence from Neil Young and maybe some Johnny Cash when it comes to the lyrical content and song. I liked that aspect of the song. I also liked the pacing on it quite a bit. It had that “let’s just kick it around a bit” kind of beat. It’s not really in a big hurry to go anywhere and that is fine by me. Where it started to lose me was some of the vocal riffs didn’t work quite the way I think they were intended. Some of them seemed like they were a bit cut off. I thought some of his falsetto scoops were interesting and I could see it growing on you.

While this song is not one of my favorite songs ever I have a lot of respect for David. It takes a lot of balls to put yourself out there. I don’t want to make it sound like this song was horrible by any means. The term ‘not my cup o’ tea’ comes to mind a lot. I have only a few Neil Young songs I like and the same can be said for Cash. Honestly my favorite Cash stuff was what he did just before he passed away. Country and Folk loves should certainly check this track out.

Who They Are:
I’m David Guitard, a Signed Professional Musician in Bathurst NB, Canada who Was Signed to ‘Asylum Productions’ on Feb. 1st, 2013 which was one of three labels which were all combined becoming AMG or Asylum Music Group (a U.S. major label) which I am also their A&R Specialist & Scouting Manager! Which I do look into any artist upon request and have a listen to their work to see if they are a good fit for AMG, if they are then I will talk to them about what it would take to become Signed! I had my album, David Guitard – ONE released on May 1st, 2013 and was re-signed May 2014 for a two year contract for my second retail album (With Eyes Wide Opened)! I as well do have professional management with ‘Young Music Management’!
The last ten years has been a time of healing, learning and growing in so many ways! Having a horrible accident in 2003 where I had to learn a lot of things over! I had gone to College for Electronics Engineering and University for Psychology with a resume three pages long before the injury but after was not like myself in any way, from the way I walked, talked, looked and even with the way I acted! Although music was in my life throughout! Then was diagnosed with epilepsy after starting to have seizures over a year later because of the damage that was done to my brain! I had to live in two special care homes for a little over a year with a long recovery being almost nine years total! Even so have achieved all that I have since and do believe I have been blessed! Even though I was in such bad shape in the hospital not even knowing my own name or any reality whatsoever, the first thing I had asked for was my guitar! What I had done was dedicate myself to my music and healing! Now as well I continue to do that although I do now also dedicate it to my fiancé as well! So I Had found out in Feb, 2012 that I healed 100%, although still diagnosed with very mild epilepsy with no seizure for many years! Now after eleven years am proud to say that I have achieved what I have with a wonderful outlook for my future!
I was lucky to be alive, yes, went through an ordeal being in a coma for ten days and in two hospitals but now am in control of my own life in every way! It is eleven years later and I am a better, stronger man than I have ever been! I live as clean a life as I can and enjoy living that way! I am in a relationship with a woman I love, have no kids but do hope to have in my future continuing to work hard to make sure that we will have as comfortable a life as possible!
With my album having been released last year I had put 90+ hours a week into working for so long, now am able to bring it down to about 70/80 a week lol, putting the time into marketing and promoting my album and music, as well as all I do to help other artists both on AMG’s roster as well as artists looking to become signed to a great labeI! Now having fans in hundreds of countries around the world, with them sending me comments, posts and blessings and have communicated with so many! Saying how they love my music, my videos and me, yes this makes me feel very blessed, loved and definitely have GOD and lost loved ones watching over me and keeping me strong! I have been through many unexpected pains in my life that now has made me much stronger than I have ever been! The owner of my label has become like a brother to me and was another blessing in my life, to have him become a part of mine! The biggest reason I do not worry about how/where my life will go is because even though music is one of the toughest careers to have, I continue to work hard and have such great people behind/beside me! It makes all those times I remember cursing my fingers worthwhile, when they would be so bloody and sore that I could not bring a sound from my guitar anymore, not being able to push the strings at all! I can honestly say that I love everything that I do in my career, although I will be glad when I can show my sweetheart the many things in life I hope too!
I grew up a farm-boy, worked in 25+ venues of work, have been educated, have many experiences that have made me the man I am but can honestly say that I am now fully a musician at heart! This is what I plan to do throughout the rest of my life for myself, my family and fans! Please remember to treat those around you with love and respect! Take care of your family and yourself! I love you all!! God Bless… 🙂

Happy Accidents – Ataraxia

Now this feels like a good old fashioned ROCK song. Those vocals make me happy in all the right places. It’s like if you took Vince Neil from back in the day and brought him into today’s music this is about what I think he would sound like. This guy has that super awesome almost but not quite nasally quality that rocks in a track like this. I am also in guitar heaven with this killer solo. Scales never ever sounded quite so damn good. There is a bridge that slows down to just vocals and the drum line that is extremely sexy. The drum work is way solid and a great bond for the vocals and guitar, way better than any Krazy Glue I could think of. I wasn’t able to spot a bass line but I could feel it in there supporting the drums and tying it all together.

If all accidents were this happy I would try to have more of them every day! I like a good old fashioned classic rock song on my playlists where ever I can shoe horn them in. For me I would match this up with some old and new songs. I’m thinking everything from the afore referenced Motley Crue to some Puddle of Mudd, Volbeat or even some of the less double bassy Five Finger Death Punch. So some serious rock stuff with some more rock metal mashup music. All I can say is listen, download then go forth and rock my friend.

Krudo – Option Is Destruction

Full speed ahead! Another lucky find for me, as this has excellent percussion and some of the best guitar work I’ve heard in a while. Also, thanks for giving me some moments where I can hear the bass line.  The screaming vocals are really nice, I can understand what they are saying so it’s not guttural screaming. Oh, and there is an excellent 80’s metal scream in the mix as well. The guitar is blazing fast with some impressive fret work. I like that there are some darker riffs mixed with some just out right fast ones then for fun we have that solo. Great slide work and he is making that instrument sing for real. The drum stays tight to the guitar helping keep that blistering pace alive and kicking. Combined with that vocal style this songs is an all-around winner.

Wild horses couldn’t keep me from downloading this song to my phone and my server. The men in my house are going to go nuts when they hear it. Reminds me a lot of some old Slayer and Testament that my hubby plays. You are going to want to keep this paired with other fast and heavy songs in order to keep that energy flowing.

Beyond the Styx – Labyrinthectomy

Let’s start this party with some killer percussion then swing straight off into some awesome screaming vocals. I have no idea what this guy is saying and I could actually care less. This is absolutely brilliant work. It’s freaking me out just a little bit and making me wanna get up and move my ass. Oh my, and there are some clean vocals lurking around in there from time to time, LOVE IT. Ok, so for the music… The drum work is so tight you could bounce a quarter off its ass. This is the kind of drum line I need to see live.  I love the way the guitar skips merrily through the landmines that the drummer has laid down. It’s so dirty I feel like I need a shower after listening to the guitarist, and we know that is something that never fails to make me a happy camper.

Oh did I like this song. I’ve only recently gotten into hardcore shit like this through bands like Slipknot (I know I cite them probably too much), Five Finger Death Punch, Bullet for My Valentine and Avenged Sevenfold.  I know of songs from all these bands that would flow seamlessly with this awesome track from Beyond the Styx. If you’re into slamming pulse pounding music this may be your new jam.

Who They Are:
In the twilight of the year 2011, at the gates of Tours, appeared BEYOND THE STYX.

Combo with original intentions resolutely Metal Hardcore,
The band experiences a strange musical production because of its particularly diverse influences.

BTS surprises as the incarnation of a “musical chimera” consisting of: raw riffs hardcore & metal, tinged with unhealthy intonations, ectoplasmic beatdowns and post chaotic flights; all connected by vocals with “borderline” traits at the limit of possession.

Around this musical hybridization germinate lyrics inspired by the meeting of the spectra of a mythological era with the soul of modern times.

Their music seems to be an odyssey into the depths of the human soul, between winds of furies, waves of despair and nightmares of the abyss … Like a “Raft of the Medusa” venturing against all odds, on the rushing waters of a horizon of torment, in search an improbable land…

Hardened more than fifty concerts (including 3 tours) in 5 countries. BTS has played several times with some famous bands such as: Nasty, Hacride, Tagada Jones, Klone, Ultra Vomit, Zuul FX…

Armed with a new line-up, BTS shaping the future by ensuring the succession of its preceding EP “sloughing off the shades” (DOME studio: TANK, One Way Mirror, Lyzanxia …) by an ambitious first album pushing to its paroxysm an experimentation as unhealthy as sharply incisive (producing DOME Studio / mixing Basement Recording Studio : Between the buried & me, For Today, In the midst of Lions, Liferuiner, the Human abstract…)

Kicklighter – Everyone Knows

This is a really nice upbeat song. They lyrics are a mix of random and storytelling, that makes this a very interesting piece lyrically speaking. Reminds me of some of the new wave songs I listened to back in the 80’s and I have a special spot in my heart for any song that brings on nostalgia. I really like the simplicity of the track. The guitar work is very solid and I think the simplicity of the line gives it an almost innocent quality. The vocals are also really nicely done though we don’t get a good sense of the vocalists range. Until the end of the song where we have a nice soring sustained note.

I liked it a bit more than I thought I would when it started. Quickly it grew on me so I would be happy to listen to this track again. I’m not sure I’m in a hurry to listen to more. I find that these days with as busy as my life has become, I often don’t have a lot of time to listen to music outside of the reviews. When I do I need it to be really hardcore blazing speed type music. All that being said, I would encourage anyone to listen to this track and explore Kicklighters other offering.

Who They Are:

I’m Everett Young, and I’m 45 years old. Just over 3 years ago, at 41, a Ph.D.-holding political scientist without an academic job, I went in a different direction and started playing guitar. I practiced really hard, formed a band, and made a record.

Given what I just told you, it sounds nothing like what you’re thinking of.

So yeah, I’ve come pretty far. Now I use my unique experience to coach guitar (and piano, my first instrument) for adults who want to start, or if not beginners transform their playing, at post-adolescent stages of their lives. I’m proof that older learners are NOT slower learners. I’ve gone from beginner to professional in less than 4 years.

I’m also a science and politics buff. Political science, duh!

Back in the day (or A long time ago in a galaxy far away) when I as in school my favorite class was choir. I especially loved choir around the holidays and of all the songs we sang over the years Carol of the Bells was always my personal favorite. It’s such a layered piece with so much movement that I can’t imagine any one not loving it.

So when Zombie Sam let me in on his Christmas secret I was beyond thrilled. I recently had the pleasure of doing a album review and a Q & A with him and found him to be an intelligent, charming and extremely talented individual. For fans you can understand why when he told me he was doing a version of the perfect Christmas song I got really excited.

When he sent me the song I was ready to burst! I got it on my server as quickly as I could so I could play it. His music is always so visual and this was no different. It has such beautiful crescendos! I feel like I could fly when I listen to his song, it’s like a salve for my soul. The orchestral work is amazing. Every section, every instrument is on point for this project. Vocal work by the choir sounds like heaven, such high and sweet. Yet there is just a bit of a sinister vibe to some of the vocals. Adding vocals from Sophia from Season of Ghosts was a brilliant addition. Her vocals always amaze me.

Overall, this is exactly what I would expect from Zombie Sam. It is beautifully composed, brilliantly played and spot on vocal work. I already have it downloaded to my server at home and on my phone. It will be in my Christmas playlist when my family and friends are over. I’m excited to share this with all of them but especially my father who also loves the song.

Arson’s Harbor – Smallest Child

This my friends is a perfect guitar intro. There is no bad to be found and it only gets better when the vocals kick in. This guy has such an inviting voice. It takes you in and wraps you in its story. I can’t imagine it getting much better than that. The music is so comforting with the attention going to that guitar. I find it to be a very soothing song with a compelling story line, sublime vocal stylings and of course that perfect guitar line. There is a minimal drum track here that hangs out in the background holding everything together in perfect timing.

I can’t wait to listen to more Arson’s Harbor. I loved just about everything they had going on in this track. For the life of me I can’t imagine anyone not loving this song. I would put it on my server and in my phone happily. There is so much you could pair this up with to make a full playlist. I kept thinking Mumford and Sons, some of my favorite prog country bands like The Eagles, The Decemberists, I could go on and on but I’ll stop there. All in all if you don’t check out this track you really are only robbing yourself of a perfect song.

Who They Are:
Arson’s Harbor is an alternative rock band from Lynchburg, VA. Forming back in November 2013, the rock foursome started practicing in a small suburban basement. With instruments in hand, Chad, Nathan, Clement, and Cole played with only one goal in mind; to write loud, heavy, face-melting songs. The band took the winter to continue practicing and near the end of February entered into the studio to start working on their first 4-song EP entitled “Grow”. With the first milestone project underway the boys were in full swing and looking to make a name for themselves.

We want to bring an energy through our music that will leave an impact on someone’s life. Music is one of the only things that makes sense to this group of guys, and we believe when you have musicians who are as in love with their craft as we are, good tunes and good times are sure to follow. So, stick around, because the beginning of this long adventure has been an absolute blast, and we have had the time of our lives playing the shows that we have been able to play thus far. We are looking forward to the rest of this journey, and hope you are looking forward to joining us on it.

The Band is:
Chad Lowry
Cole Young
Clement Villar
Nathan Stidham
