Ships Have Sailed – Midnight

I love this track. There is an absolutely epic chorus that has to kill in concert. It’s not really got an overly upbeat tempo. I would call it more of a hopeful tempo. Hope that makes sense to you guys. They have this great big huge sound that ropes you in and compels you to listen. The vocalist is killing me with his tone. It’s like standing in that first ray of sunlight after winter. His voice is so round and full, you can’t help but love it. Musically this is a really tight song. There aren’t any big over the top moments for any of the instruments and I appreciate that. Hot dogging would ruin an otherwise perfect song.

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: Yes please! I’m not so secretly hoping they read this review and send me an mp3 of this file so I can add it to my phone now.

I love the flow here. I’m really intrigued by the rhythm this guy has going on. It’s certainly not a safe for work kinda song. That being said there is some thing about this song’s honesty that I’m really bonding to. I can related to a lot of the things talked about in the song. Some of the lyrics are a bit harsh for me but that’s what life is. I love the melody in the break here it’s really a nice change of pace from the rap.

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: While I’m not a big fan of rap, I occasionally listen to a handful of tracks. However I have a number of friends who are really into this style of rap and I will be suggesting they check this out.

Cosmic Crash – Here Comes The Rain

The best way for me to review this song is to tell you how it makes me feel. The intro had me feeling a bit nostalgic for the old days when I was listening to Springsteen. I am so in love with the vocals on this track. There is such a warm tone to his voice is like comfort. You can hear just a bit of gravel to his voice and it’s one of those unique styles that you have to listen to a couple of times to fully wrap your gourd around it. I love it. Have I said that to much?  It’s not an upbeat tempo song, not really it’s a bit more melancholy. When it’s over you really do want to hit play again.

 

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: Yes. I’m fascinated with Danny’s vocals. I have plenty of songs that I could build a playlist just for this song. I think I may just do that.

Mindy Braasch – If We’re Young

This is an anthem song for the young sung with such conviction. Mindy’s voice is so round, full and rich it’s hard not to love it. She has a pretty decent range and such confidence in her talent. You can hear that in every note. It’s a really poppy tune so it’s working that get your ass on the dance floor vibe. There is a bit of repetition going on but I think that’s ok with this type of song. Overall her voice is really what your listening to in this song the music is just the cherry on top.
Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: Yes. She has a lot of covers on Youtube that I’m dying to check out.

Who They Are: When she’s not playing for congress or jamming with Steven Tyler, Mindy fills her time playing, writing and recording. LoNero – The Hammer

My first thought was, Yeah, another instrumental; so not my thing man! BUT man this band is really damn good. That lead guitarist is amazing. Hey plays this one fast and tight and puts those frets though their paces. I didn’t understand the idea of guitarcore until I listened to this song, now I get it. I also thought the bass player was rather impressive as well. This song has a fairly snappy bass line to it and he handles it well. I liked the upbeat tempo of the song and I’m betting the drummer didn’t really break a sweat.

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: I’m a big fan of guitar work so I imagine I would probably listen to more stuff. I kinda miss some lyrics here but personal preference right? I have quite a few 80’s/style playlists I would through this onto.

Who They Are: LoNero gave birth to Guitarcore with their first release “Relentless” in 2007. Fourteen tracks of punishing rhythms and strong melodic hooks. DEEP King – Miami Deep

You may have read some of my other house music reviews so you know it’s not some thing I normally listen to . But I gotta say this track was really kind of fun. It’s got a groovy beat going on that I bet would be great fun at a club or a rave. I can see myself at a rave actually listening to this while I dance up a storm. I’ve actually got a whole mental image but you don’t want to know that much about me. So back to the track… It reminds me a lot of some of the Miami Fl rhythms I heard in my travels there.  Over all a pretty good listen, but it would be better served in a party atmosphere.

 

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: I don’t have a playlist that would fit this track and I don’t listen to dance music.  That being said if dance is your music than I would certainly suggest you give it a listen.

Betty Doom – Winterspell

Wow, I really love this track. The intro feels very rock inspired but when the drums (bongo’s maybe?) kick in it really changes the whole tone of the song. The female vocals are amazing. I would normally address the mixing issues but this is a rehearsal not so much a live performance and taken for what this is it’s stunning. There are some really well timed whispered vocals that are such an opposite to the strong sweet tones that she has for most of the song. The back beat on this is an inspired mix of up and down tempo that really works for me.

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: Considering how their rehearsal sounds I can’t wait until they get an ep out. That is going to be epic. I’m not sure I have a playlist I would add it to at the moment, but I’m planning to work it in some where.

The Aviators – What do you want from me

We’ve got a nice upbeat popish rhythm with a rather nice guitar line. It’s making me think of summer, hanging out with my friends drinking and doing generally dumb stuff. Not so much lyrically but from the beat. Lyrically it’s a first love story (to me). I could easily see this in a soundtrack for a romcom. I hope that comes off right as I mean that as a total compliment. It would be a great morning song, it’s got that energizing beat and style to it. I like the vocalists voice and the way he tells a story. I get the scantest bit of gravel in his voice in parts of the song that are sheer perfection considering his tone.

 

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: I wasn’t sure the first time I listened, but after the second time around I’ve already got the song stuck in my head (a good thing). So yeah I would listen to more of this. I want to add them to my One Republic/Maroon 5 playlist.

Who They Are: The Aviators from Glasgow have gone from strength to strength in their short time together as a band. Self-releasing a three song EP early in the band’s career to a sold out Classic Grand audience which later went on sale in HMV stores nationally.

J. Latham – Disaster

Right off the bat I’m thinking progressive country. Which is totally cool, I’ve always loved prog country personally. I really like this guys voice but the production seems a bit low and that seems to step on his vocals a bit. I am not holding that against the song or artist by the way. The guitar work is excellent. There is a certain feeling you should be getting when you listen to a song like this. If you’ve been exposed to a lot of progressive country you know what I’m talking about and this track certainly conveys that feeling beautifully. I also am enjoying the pacing here. Kinda Neil Youngish really.

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: I have a playlist that contains bands like Amazing Rhythm Aces, Poco, Eagles and Kansas. This song would be a prefect fit for that list.

Living Last – Rescue

Vocally I like most of what I heard on this track. The female vocalist has some hellified range and good breath control for sustained notes. In fact my first thought when I heard her was Paramour! She has that same not quite but almost pouty sound to her voice with an occasional bit of gravel that is a really nice combo. I think my issues were less vocal technique and a production choice. I do feel like there are times when she sounds almost dropped out. I hate to say that because she really does have a stellar voice. I also wanna touch on the male backing vocals for a sec. I love the tone and growl he’s going going on. I would so love to hear more of that. When both vocalist melded together it was true music magic. Ok, so musically I loved the music. It’s got a rocking upbeat speedy with some moments of metal drumming mastery that you wouldn’t necessarily expect on a straight rock track.  Guitars were nice and crunchy just the way I like them.

 

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: Yes. Despite my comments regarding vocals or maybe because of them I would like to listen to more of their music to see if I feel like I have the same critique. I’m hoping that for me, this was their B side tune.

Ghost Parade – Reach

I really loved the Rage Against the Machine style opening. Fantastic guitar work there, though I was happy to see that it didn’t continue through the whole song. I’m good with ska in limited doses. When the song kicks in after the intro the style changes up to a more straight up rock tempo. Another thing I like here is that the bass line is very apparent. It’s not often a bassist gets to be heard so I’m really enjoying it in this track. Vocally the guy can really hold onto those long sustained notes. He has a solid, nice round voice that I think rides well on top of the music.

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: I’m interested to see if they have heavier stuff. I like this, but I think I would like to see them really tear that ass up. I’m betting dollars to dougnuts they have just the song I’m looking for. As to if I would put it on a playlist: I have a very short list that includes Change by Deftones, 3 Libras by A Perfect Circle and a couple other similar tunes. I think this song would work well on that list.

Sirens & Shelter – Breath

I love the lyrics to this song. The emotion this guy can deliver with nothing more than an acoustic guitar and his voice is rather amazing. Vocally I liked the natural breaks in his voice that paired with a semi gruffness. This isn’t one of those “smooth” singers and that is what makes this special. I would love to hear a version of this song with a full band behind him. While it might take away the intimate nature of the song in it’s current state, I think it would add a new level of wonderful.
 

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: My interest has been peaked for sure. I am interested in some other offerings to see where they may fit on my playlist.

HellsBelles – Troubled Times

This is pretty fast paced song. Lots of pounding drums and a guitar line that won’t quit. I often wonder with guitarists how they can move their hands after they do a show. I thought the song was an odd blend metal and punk. Lyrically I’m getting a heavy punk influence while musically I’m getting a Ministry vibe. Vocals are decent and seem to work well with the song.

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: I would listen to this again on occasion. I would most likely match this with some old school metal. I think that would be the best fit for this particular track.

Murder On Her Mind – Break Away

If you’ve got a hate on for some one grab their picture and listen to this song then systematically gouge out their eyes. In the picture that is. This is on heavy ass hard core song. The drum line alone is worth the price of admission in this song. During the chorus there is a bit of a change up with a tempering of the drums and some harmonies from the vocalist. Personally I’m a bigger fan of the thrashy guttural vocals. The guitar work is really quite spectacular as well. I had a hard time making them out over the drums, but that was because I was so into the drum line. I don’t want to take any thing away from the guitar work as it was so well done. All in all this is a great song with a nice change of tempo in the chorus but it still rocks all the way through.

Would I Listen to More of Their Stuff: I dig the thrash aspects of the song so I would definetly check out more of their stuff to see if there is more thrash gold to be had.
