Overblood – Childhood’s Grave

I’m pretty sure the guitarist’s fingers are on fire during at least one part of this out and out metal jam. I’m not sure what I’m enjoying more in this track, the guitar work or the drum line. Both are just blazing and amazing. That double bass is absolutely killer! The vocal work is tight as hell with some serious screaming/growling vocals. This particular song has a lot of energy to it with the speed at which they play. I couldn’t get a good read on the vocals due to the style. I often have issues getting the vocals on songs like this. But that’s always been ok. I kind of look on the vocals as another instrument when used like this. It round out the song and makes a solid difference in the end result.

I’ve been exposed to a lot more hardcore metal during these last few months than I’ve had in most of my adult life. So finding songs like these that I like is so much fun. I plan to download this song and put it on my list for the radio show. Mostly cause this one is a lot of fun to listen to and heavy as hell. I’m still working on a playlist for here at the house that focuses on metal songs like this. So I can’t say what I would match it with since I’m still figuring it out. Who They Are:
Born in 1996 in Udine (Italy), Overblood proved to be an active part in the Italian underground since their beginning.

The band reached a stable and competitive formation only after a first demo (“Travel Soul” – 1999) and several live shows.

In 2001 the band recorded a full-length self-produced album called “Our blood” that was received with many words of encouragement from the Italian and foreign press.

The intensive live activity for the promotion of the album causes an unfortunate instability and only in the summer of 2006, after a line-up change, Overblood found again stability and motivations.

Since then the band has worked hard to re-define their changed style, in order to find a new sound following the ideas of the new formation.

The mini cd “Infected Society” (recorded at SaoJo Studio and mastered at Cutting Room Studios in Sweden) is the product of this re-elaboration.

In 2011 the band recorded at the prestigious Fear Studio Recording in Ravenna the new full-length album called “Excision”.

In 2013 Overblood released the official video for their song “Against the holy alliance”.

Far’n’Hate – Always Overcome

Do you love getting your ass kicked by double bass? Well then step right up, we have the song you are looking for! The super awesome double bass drum work sets a pace that has to kill the guitarist’s fingers. Cause that guy is playing his ax to beat the devil no doubt about it. I think if any mortal tried to play this song it might just be the end of you. One of my favorite things though is that bridge part where we are getting a really nice melody out of the vocalist. So there is screaming vocals, clean vocals and some melody all in the same song. These elements combined will always result in me finding a song that I love.

I gotta see these guys play live at some point. It’s a moral imperative! The vocals, the drum work, the guitar riffs these are a few of my favorite things. I’m thinking that this song really needs to go in rotation for my radio show. I’m already making a list of songs and I do believe this one has to be on it. So yep, I’m going to seek out more of Far’n’Hate’s music because it’s just plain that awesome.

Who They Are:
Defining themselves simply as “Modern Metal” Far’n’Hate was conceived in a small village in the Spanish Costa Brava in 2007.

In 2008 the band self-produced their first EP, opening many doors to them performing at venues and festivals all over Spain.
After growing and establishing a local fan base and spreading the word about their intense and energetic live show, in september of 2011 the band releases their debut full-length album titled “From Death comes Life”.
In march of 2013 they released a 6 track EP called “Steadfast”.

The band is currently touring Europe and writing their 2nd full length album.

Schemata Theory – A Complex Slate

I really loved just about everything about this song. Vocally there are some wicked awesome clean vocals backed by some equally sweet screaming style vocals. I even caught a few sustained notes that were dead on. The guitar work is pretty damn breathtaking! It’s obvious their guitarists have some sick skills when it comes to their instruments. I gotta tell you this has the kind of percussion I’m always on the lookout for. Love those pulsing drum lines that tend to beat the crap outta you if you crank it like I tend to do. Between the varied vocal styles, the guitar work and the drum line this song is a major win for my collection.

This is one of those tracks that as soon as I heard it I wondered why I’m not hearing it on the radio already. I can’t wait to hear some more of Schemata Theory’s songs. This one has me all like “I need this song right now!” I want it on my phone and my server plus I would love to play it on my upcoming radio show. This song would fit in perfectly.

Who They Are:
Schemata Theory is a six piece metal band based in Reading, Berkshire. Combining many aspects of the metal genre, the band’s debut album ‘Dry Lung Rhetoric’ fuses classic thrash riffing, progressive instrumental passages, melodic hooks and soaring choruses, creating music that is accessible, original and thought provoking. This may not be the heaviest song I’ve listen to or reviewed musically but those vocals are straight up hard core. One has to think this guy is going through throat spray by the gallon! The vocals are a mix between screaming and just plain dirty vocals. I would have expected those vocal styling’s combined with a much faster back beat, but this is really more of a mid tempo jam. I gotta say that I liked the mix. The drum work is nice and tight creating a web for the guitar, bass and vocals to play over. The guitar work is pretty dirty even though it’s more background to the vocal track. There is some killer guitar work in the solo section that you really just have to hear.

We will call this song the next evolution in my journey into metal music. I don’t normally listen to this style of music because honestly it often scares me a bit. I’m really looking forward to sharing this one with my hubby and my son. They are way more into this genre of music than I am and they’ll be able to give me some good ideas on who I could put this on a playlist with. Since I don’t listen to this kind of music often enough I’m not sure who I would pair this with considering what I have on my server right now. Dissident By Birth – Generation Bullshit

Some people say they need time to wake up in the morning before they listen to some thrashy metal like this. I say grow some balls! This is an awesome wake up track (I proved that this morning). I love the driving rhythm to the song and the way it matches the fierce guitar work. Some of those riffs are about as perfect as a riff can get. The vocals are an amazing mix of clean and screaming vocals. The lyrics are really well written and quite angry from what I could make out. I just loved the percussion work on this track, fast and heavy with a take no prisoner’s attitude.

I like it fast, loud and heavy so this track was right up my alley. I didn’t really get into screaming vocal styles until rather late in the game (read the last 10/15 years). I used to be a pop princess believe it or not but now a days I’m much happier sitting down and jamming it out to some thing heavy. Considering their guitar style I would put this on a playlist with some old school Pantera. Who would you put on a list with this song?

Dissident By Birth, originally known as Dissident Aggressors(then just Dissident) is a Crossover – Thrash – Metalcore band that was formed in 2006 in Teramo,Abruzzo Italy.
The early lineup was composed of young drummer Lorenzo Renzetti, guitarist Martino Sgattoni, an improvised bass player and lead singer David Di Girolamo. This four-piece quickly changed as the band was trying to write their primordial material! Regardless of the very unsupportive musical scene of their hometown the Metal Act managed to release two Juvenile demos and gigged sporadically with italian Death Metal bands. Reduced only to Three components, frustated by the local evironment, Martino Sgattoni and David Di Girolamo decided to split . In 2014 what was the brainchild of Martino Sgattoni(lead and rhythm guitar,composer) and David Di Girolamo(vocals and lyricist) found new life with the fresh injection of new drummer Daniele Lupisella(20 years old) and bass player Roberto D’amico . Dissident By Birth was finally (re)born! This new lineup detached from previous incarnations embracing Hardcore/Crossover rather than Death Metal, in addition to their Thrash Metal sound.
Although the band is inspired by icons such as Exodus, Slayer, Sepultura, Suicidal Tendencies and modern Metalcore masters as Hatebreed and the likes, Dissident By Birth acknowledges no limitation to their sound as each and every member comes from a different backgroud. Anyway their sound can be easly referred to as Thrash Metal with Hardcore attitude . Dissident By Birth is now playing live shows wherever they can, uncompromised and constantly improving.

Countess – City Of Satan

Well this is a new kind of music for me! It’s not like anything else I listen to which makes it a lot of fun out of the box. The music is really well done and it sounds like they have a stringed instrument somewhere in the mix, but I’m hard pressed to say which one. The guitar work is tight as hell with some interesting riffs. There are some keyboard elements that work to make the song just a touch more sinister than it already was. I had a hard time making out the vocals but the style in a bizarre 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon reminds me of old Halford. Not that this guy can wail like him or anything it’s more about the key he sings in. The drum line is pretty upbeat and verges on relentless most of the time. I’ve found that a lot of drum lines aren’t necessarily blazing fast but I would still classify them as relentless as they just never slow down. I loved the guitar work and the most excellent riffs the guitarist pulled off.

As I said this is a new style of music for me. It’s a nice hodgepodge of styles that I like with some cool vocal nummies for your ears. I would like to have it on my server so I could play around with it on some playlists. I have some old 80’s metal with some Priest, Maiden and Metallica that I would put this with to see how it flows. I think I want to investigate this band and others like them.

The Dead Sexy – Sleeping Beauty

Oh dear lord, I love this song! It’s some of my favorite styles all rolled up in one terrific song. There are vocal floaty moments, clean vocals, dirty vocals a double bass and awesome guitar riffs. There are a couple of vocalists in this group and I’m not sure who does what, but I love them both! The floaty guy has that floaty quality to his vocals that always makes me smile. He has a good range and can hold a note. I like how the screaming/growly vocals are present but not in your face, almost like an echo effect. That occasional double bass damn near makes the song worth listening to all by itself. I love how newer bands are using that in a more mainstream style song application. It’s a great intro to harder metal songs. It’s what brought me into the fold.

I more than like this song. I love this song. It’s going on my server and I’m putting it on my phone. I would match this one up with a couple of the songs I’ve reviewed here. The first one I think of that I would mix this with is From Ashes to New. I would also put Divot on that list as well. Make sure you check out this band, it’s certainly one to watch!

Ascending Souls – I’m Not Going

Loving this intro guys! The drums along with that guitar is amazing, especially with those cymbals. Those vocals are so rough and just plain cool it’s killing me. This song damn near abuses you but you can’t help but want more. You have some clean vocals and there are some spots with awesome screaming vocals. Dominic Steele has an amazing command over his vocals. I mean dayum! The guitar work is stellar hands down some of the best I’ve heard in a while. I am in total music love with some of Dominic’s riffs. Gabe’s bass work is the glue that is holding these three men down. Love, love it. Billy’s drum work is a total frontal assault on your senses with a penchant for that cymbal.

I dug this track from the first second it started. These guys are hella talented. I love the fact that they have managed to develop such a full round sound with just 3 guys. There are moments when I get an old school Metallica vibe and then there’s times where I swear I’m hearing Zakk Wylde in that guitar line. I can’t tell you how much I want this on my server and my phone. I’m just going to create a list of heavy drum and guitar songs and add this one. That list is going to kick your ass up and down town. I’m thinking some Mudvayne, Metallica, Megadeath, Five Finger Death Punch and more!

Beyond the Styx – Labyrinthectomy

Let’s start this party with some killer percussion then swing straight off into some awesome screaming vocals. I have no idea what this guy is saying and I could actually care less. This is absolutely brilliant work. It’s freaking me out just a little bit and making me wanna get up and move my ass. Oh my, and there are some clean vocals lurking around in there from time to time, LOVE IT. Ok, so for the music… The drum work is so tight you could bounce a quarter off its ass. This is the kind of drum line I need to see live. I love the way the guitar skips merrily through the landmines that the drummer has laid down. It’s so dirty I feel like I need a shower after listening to the guitarist, and we know that is something that never fails to make me a happy camper.

Oh did I like this song. I’ve only recently gotten into hardcore shit like this through bands like Slipknot (I know I cite them probably too much), Five Finger Death Punch, Bullet for My Valentine and Avenged Sevenfold. I know of songs from all these bands that would flow seamlessly with this awesome track from Beyond the Styx. If you’re into slamming pulse pounding music this may be your new jam.

BERDOO – True Blood

Something about their music reminds me so much of Volbeat. I think it’s the drum line. The only thing is I think I like Berdoo better than Volbeat. The guitar work has me in musical lust for sure. That is some hard core rock rhythm drum and guitar work. I would also like to say thank you for giving me a bass line I can hear. Love, love that. This may be one of the best instrumentals I’ve heard in a very long time, but I think this is another song that could have supported a vocal track.

So at the end of the day I think this is like a big mashup of styles including Volbeat, COC and Megadeath. For me that was plenty of awesome in one song. Despite missing the lyrics I though the tune was pretty awesome and I would listen to it again. I think it would sit well with some other monster instrumental music. I think anything from Vai would be good and Megadeath has a couple of instrumental tracks and so does Metallica. All good fits for this rocking instrumental.

Vincent Musanti – Toxic Reign

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing several guitar virtuoso’s in my life. Back in the day my friend Colby could tear some shit up. My BFF’s brother’s kid is in a band called Osmium and they rock ass. Vincent Musanti is another one of those guitarists that once you hear him you know he is going places. The kid is 15 years old and plays better than some 40 year olds you hear on the radio. He has a brilliant sense of timing and his fret work is outstanding. He’s the kind of guitarist you could easily see someone like Ozzy picking up and launching (see Zakk Wylde).

While not a fan of instrumentals, I gotta give this one it’s due. The drum work is really solid and provides the perfect backbone for the guitar lines to rest on. The guitar work itself is spectacular. I would love to see this kid in a metal band. That would be some kick your ass music with the right band members. I’m downloading this song so I can put it on a list with some Vai. I don’t have a lot of instrumentals yet, but my kids and my hubby like them from time to time, so I’m going to start building a list.

Kaveat – Immortal Machine

That guitar work is totally off the hook crazy man! I love the blazing rhythm of this track. This one starts strong and just keeps building. Those screaming vocals combined with Segan’s clean vocal styles are a brilliant match. I love how her voice seems to float just above the music, while those screaming vocals tether her to the song. The percussion is wild as hell. The sometimes staccato nature of the drum work reminds me a lot of some of my favorite Slipknot songs. There are some truly amazing tension breaks in this song, which is great because the music has some really good build ups.

Let’s see do I like this song? Umm, hell yea I do! I want to get this on my phone for my trip tomorrow. I have been building a list with some Slipknot, In This Moment, Static X and I think this one would fit in perfectly. I’ll turn it up as loud as I can and my son and I will rock our asses off on the road!

Disappearer – Dog From Hell (pcp mix)

I like the dark atmosphere of the song. It’s got a lot of really good almost demony guitar work. There’s also a stellar drum line at work here. I miss a vocal track, but that’s just me. I never really have understood the idea behind instrumental songs. However I do feel like this one is special. It’s not about “Hey, I’m the most awesome guitarist that ever lived!!”. This one seems to me more about creating an atmosphere and allowing the listening to visualize a story line for the music. I kinda like that part. I think the more I listen to instrumental music the more I understand it.

Despite my non love for the instrumental, I think this one I would like to download and keep around. I can think of several scenarios where this track would be awesome. For instance when my metal minded friends come over I can throw this one and we can enjoy it while we chat and stuff. Overall a good track and well worth the time to take a listen.

So we are all square, I am not familiar with the Asking Alexandria version of this song. So I won’t be comparing the two works.

This song will wake you up in the morning. The intro kicks your ass right off the bat, I like that. There is so much going on in this track it’s hard to keep track of where I’m at in the review. There are some amazing screaming vocals that I would love to hear more of! The clean vocals are pretty decent to, though I think sometimes the guy is pushing himself a bit hard when he hits the high end of his register. I love how this song pulls influence from several genres. I catch a bit of punk, thrash, and death metal all in one song. There is even an absolutely beautiful moment of piano work with some amazing vocal work and harmonies. I did not see that coming at all! I love this down tempo moment, it’s perfect in the middle of all the musical chaos that is the bulk of the song.

Parts of this song remind me a lot of old Obituary songs my husband listens to. Especially in those moments with that deep growling vocal style. I also think I could list this with the heavier Slipknot because they both have that chaotic musical style down to an art form. All and all this is a song that I would like to have on my server. This may be one of the most bizarre songs that I’ve reviewed, but I also think it’s one of the most fun.
