Arson’s Harbor – Smallest Child

This my friends is a perfect guitar intro. There is no bad to be found and it only gets better when the vocals kick in. This guy has such an inviting voice. It takes you in and wraps you in its story. I can’t imagine it getting much better than that. The music is so comforting with the attention going to that guitar. I find it to be a very soothing song with a compelling story line, sublime vocal stylings and of course that perfect guitar line. There is a minimal drum track here that hangs out in the background holding everything together in perfect timing.

I can’t wait to listen to more Arson’s Harbor. I loved just about everything they had going on in this track. For the life of me I can’t imagine anyone not loving this song. I would put it on my server and in my phone happily. There is so much you could pair this up with to make a full playlist. I kept thinking Mumford and Sons, some of my favorite prog country bands like The Eagles, The Decemberists, I could go on and on but I’ll stop there. All in all if you don’t check out this track you really are only robbing yourself of a perfect song.

Of Course Not – Contagious

I really like this tune! It reminds me of some of the Paramour I’ve heard. The lead vocals are so strong and yet it sounds absolutely effortless. The musical composition is so damn well done. Instead of having the standard track style, they were able to create a layered sound. At first listen one might confuse it for a chaotic melding of instruments, but listen a little longer and you’ll catch the layering effect I’m talking about. If feels like the drums, bass and guitar are weaving in and out of each other.  Another thing I really enjoyed was the vocal play between their female and male singers. They play off each other so well! The drum work really stands out for me, I love that thunderous drum work there in that middle break. The guitar line is equally impressive with some straight up power riffs that continuously make this an interesting, fun and entertaining track to listen to.

Of course I would listen to more Of Course Not! The poppy punkish nature of this song is one I’ve always tended to gravitate to. I would love to have it on my server and my phone. I would pair this one up with some Paramour, P!nk (I’m thinking Blow Me One Last Kiss) and Green Day. There are elements of these bands that would match Of Course Not’s song brilliantly.

BERDOO – True Blood

Something about their music reminds me so much of Volbeat. I think it’s the drum line. The only thing is I think I like Berdoo better than Volbeat. The guitar work has me in musical lust for sure. That is some hard core rock rhythm drum and guitar work. I would also like to say thank you for giving me a bass line I can hear. Love, love that. This may be one of the best instrumentals I’ve heard in a very long time, but I think this is another song that could have supported a vocal track.

So at the end of the day I think this is like a big mashup of styles including Volbeat, COC and Megadeath. For me that was plenty of awesome in one song. Despite missing the lyrics I though the tune was pretty awesome and I would listen to it again. I think it would sit well with some other monster instrumental music. I think anything from Vai would be good and Megadeath has a couple of instrumental tracks and so does Metallica. All good fits for this rocking instrumental.

UVBulb – Black Art Of Obscurantism

I’ve come to appreciate certain aspects of instrumentals. I like that I can put it on and listen to it, yet still have a conversation with someone and not feel like I missed out on something. To me that is important. I have times where I just want to have every one shut the hell up so I can listen to music and other time (more often than not) I want music in the background while I’m chatting it up with the hubby or kids. This is one of those chattin with the fam kinda songs. It’s got a good up beat pace which keeps a nice energy going. Think Herbie Hancock from the 80’s only with a serious industrial edge. On this one I kept wishing for lyrics because I think the music is solid enough to carry them. That being said vocals weren’t necessary for the song. Again, personal preference.

I wish I was more into instrumentals so I had a more solid background for reviewing them. While I get a lot of them and I am developing an appreciation I can’t say that I have much of it on my personal server. However I did like this tune and can see throwing it on one of those background music kinda lists. I could put it with a couple of songs that just came to mind. There is one instrumental from Linkin Park, its short but it exists and then there is Nine Inch Nails. I think this would be a good fit with those bands.

theWiggHead – DarkDays ft Psy Ceiling

I like the general flow and feeling of this song. It’s got an awesome dark vibe that is really working for me. The rap that overlays the music is a bit different from what I’ve heard before. I like the lilt to the rappers voice. Despite the overall darkness of the sound I actually found his voice to be somewhat comforting in the deep end of the pool that is the music. Initially I thought this was going to be an instrumental or maybe ambient song, however I was wrong on that one. The piano work is amazingly well done. It sets the pace for this song since there is a lack of drum work. I’m fairly confident the rest of the music is done via synth though I wouldn’t bet my left little toe on it.

Overall I liked the song. It made me rather curious about the other stuff The Wigg Head has done. I think I’ll have to check it out and see what else this guy has to offer. I’m not sure that I would download the song, but that is straight up a personal preference. I don’t really have any thing I could match it with at the moment, but in all honest I’m sure it would groove well with some other slower rap styles.

Autumn Blair – No Place Like Home

While country isn’t my wheelhouse for music, I do listen to it and have some favorite country songs and singers. Nothing I would call recent though. This song makes me want to touch base with my country side however. Her vocals are amazingly strong (a must for any female country singer). Her twang is 100% country perfection.  Her sustained notes are to be admired (I wish I could pull that off) and her connection to the lyrics are undeniable. The music is a bit country and a little bit rock. I love that combo because it makes it easy to introduce a country song to someone who doesn’t normally listen to it. Personally I connected well with her story, because I’m pretty sure she is singing about my family. Ok, well minus the boot part.

Even though I don’t normally listen to country music I did like this song. I would love to get my grandma to listen to it, as she is the resident country fan in our family. So it would be cool to get her take on that. So I’ll be downloading this song to share with my country loving fam and friends. As for myself, I don’t have a clue what I would pair it with as far as the music I already have. My country collection is pretty old featuring artists list Garth, Randy Travis and Reba. So I could pair Autumn Blair up with those guys. OH, and Patsy Cline I love me some Patsy but I can’t think of any of her songs that would pair up with this one.

Who They Are:
As a coal miner’s daughter living in the deep valleys of the South, I’ve found my true calling as a vocalist. While my roots are deep in music (I’m related to Loretta Lynn), I have my own unique Country sound.

At the age of 8, I began my music career competing and winning various music competitions. Later, I went on to receive a golden ticket to Hollywood on American Idol. I also appeared on Lifetime’s reality TV show, Chasing Nashville. My proudest moment, however, is performing as one of the youngest musicians ever on the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame stage.

Some of my most popular songs featured on the radio in the region include, “Hear Me Now,” “Daddy’s Little Girl,” “No Place Like Home” and “I’ll Be the DJ.” You can purchase these songs and others on iTunes and Amazon. Madmartigan – Working on My Vertical Leap

I’m a huge fan of the movie “Willow” so I was excited as soon as Madmartigan came up on my radar. Somehow though though this song was really not what I was expecting. Not that I should have had expectations, but you know how it is. I really love the slow and methodical pacing to the track. It’s got some really awesome floaty aspects, especially that voice. It’s high and sweet and the guy can hold a note. The music is excellent, with some killer slow hand guitar work and minimal drum work. There were a number of times that I was able to easily spot the bass line (good job guys) and the combine work of the players is amazing. I really love a good floaty piece.

I will be getting this song. I want to put it on a list with some of my other favorite floaty songs. I really like a lot, especially when I’m in one of those moods. Other floaty songs that I really love come from bands like Red, Chevelle, Staind, some Stone Sour and now Madmartigan. I would share my playlist ideas with you, but I think I just did. Any who… check it out.

High/Low – Crashland

Looking for something upbeat and full of energy? This may be your jam! While it’s not really what I would consider punk, it’s not that far off the mark. So maybe more like Pop/Punk style. I’m loving that straight up in your face drum line. The guitar work is spot on. I love that blazing pace! I have to mention there are some excellent drum rolls in this piece as well. Vocally, I dig the guys range and tone. It’s a bit nasally, but I think in this song it works perfectly. This would be a great tune to throw on when you have to get motivated. I wasn’t able to catch a lot of the lyrics, but what I did catch I liked. I think I may have to listen to it a few more times to catch all of what they are saying.

I liked this one enough I would check out more of their work, however I’m not sure that I would download this particular track. I can’t really quantify why exactly. I liked it, but I’m not sure I see myself loading this track up in a playlist. But like I said I plan to check out more of their work, I have a feeling that they have something that I will find I have to have.

Sky Burns Red Band – Riddle

I’m only a few seconds into this song but I like it already. So far it’s a slowed down track with a dark/sinister kind of groove. I hear a lot of bass, always something that makes me happy. And that guitar is totally awesome. Down and dirty is my favorite guitar style and while it’s a bit sparse it’s really well done when they kick it in.  There is something about this band (maybe the vocals) that makes me think of Telsa back in the day. Man I loved that band, and this guy has that kind of voice. I’m also getting a bit of a Filter feel (also from the vocals). Is that a violin that I’m hearing from time to time? Whatever it is it’s awesome.

I loved this song. It was like a mash up of some of my favorite styles. That violin or whatever it was, was a perfect underscore for the guitar. The vocals were just killing me! Kinda dark, kinda brooding and completely cool. I totally intend to listen to more of their songs and this one is going to go on my phone and my server. I would put this song into a list with some Red, Filter, and AIC.

Who They Are:

From the deepest depths of the Swindon music scene surfaces SkyBurnsRed, an eclectic rock band with a orchestral twist. Although guitar and violin would rarely associate under normal circumstances, the haunting tones of the classical instrument become electrified and entangled in the heavy rock foundations creating the bands striking sound.

In the last year the band have flourished, recording their first official EP, Madness and Reason, at the Vale Studios and regularly featuring on BBC Wiltshire Introducing. The highlight of SkyBurnsRed’s CV is a recent gig at the Indigo2 at London’s o2 arena. This is just one of copious support and headline slots they’ve triumphed across the country and around their local stomping ground of Wiltshire.
