Pentagram, the highly influential American heavy metal/doom act fronted by mastermind Bobby Liebling, formed in the early 1970s. Through four decades of adversity and triumph, Pentagram has become a legendary international act and has firmly stamped its name in the heavy metal history books.

Although always a cult act with a strong and dedicated worldwide fan base, Pentagram has enjoyed a recent surge in interest due in part to the fly-on-the-wall 2011 documentary, Last Days Here, following the life, trials and tribulations of Bobby Liebling. The film gained international recognition, travelling the worldwide film festival circuit where it won several awards including “Best Music Documentary” at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam.
Stay tuned for more information on Pentagram and All Your Sins, out next month on Peaceville.

Random AKA MegaRan – Best Friends

I love the positive nature of this track! I am really grooving on the flow and Random’s vocal style. I’ve listened to a lot of rap songs here on the site, but this is one of the few that I feel like there is a solid connection between Random and the vocals. It’s got a lot of bounce. He can come over and raid my fridge any time, just do a little rap for me first! Not a lot of songs like this leave me with a smile on my face. As a huge plus this is a song you can play around the kiddo’s and not have to worry about them singing it. Musically, yeah it’s got some synth style to it. I know I complain about that a lot but I think it works here. It feels really playful behind Random’s rap.

So I love this song. I want to send this to my best friends because I think they would love it as well. I want to have this on my server and my phone. I need to put together a list of songs that just kinda make me happy. This one would probably be one of the first songs I would put on the list. I’m talking about every thing from the song “Happy” to “Uptown Funk” and “Word Crimes”. Hey they all put a smile on my face and a bounce in my step just like this song does!

AWAAPP – Need Your Love

Wow, this really takes me back! The whole vibe of this track is a psychedelic trip. It makes me think a great deal of bands like Floyd.  It has that experimental style to it that is most commonly associated with Dark Side of the Mon. I love the guitar work. It’s not really showy and yet this guy doesn’t let you miss that he is really damn good with his instrument. The vocals are mostly resting lazily in the background and possibly filtered. In this particular song I don’g have issue with that. I makes the vocals more of an instrument then a “voice”. It really enhances the experimental vibe a lot. The drum line is very simple but provides a strong back bone for the track on the overall.

Though I’m not a huge fan of Floyd, I gotta say I found this piece to be rather attractive. I can’t really put my finger on what I liked about it, just that I did. I would match this track up with some Floyd (obviously) and some of the more experimental Beatles music. Most likely when relaxing with some cocktails and herb. I don’t see it going on my phone, but certainly on my server for future entertainment.

Killezzy – No Emotion

I really like the R&B aspects of this song. For the most part I like the lyrics. There are some parts that would prevent me from playing this around the kiddo’s. I find that is an issue for me with a lot of rap oriented songs. I have to be mindful of the language around the small ones. The vocals make me very curious because I can tell this cat can sing but they opted to use a filter on his voice. The story is really good and one I think most people can connect with on a base level. Especially that part about “I promise we gonna find a way”. I thought that was a pretty powerful message. Musically I would like to hear it with a full band. By now that should be expected from me. Now that being said I thought this one had some interesting modulations.  I get live with that because I didn’t get bored listening to it.

This one is making me wish I had more rap/R&B in my personal collection. I would listen to this when I’m by myself or with my friends. I don’t have much any thing in my stash that would really work well with a track like this. As always I’l be sharing this with some of my rap/R&B friends. I’m fairly confident that this will be well received by all of them.

Angels on the Battlefield – A Walking Plague

This may be the song that makes me love instrumentals. Normally I’m one of those people who likes every song to have a lyrical content. This song however would not be as awesome as it is with them. I’m in love with that low slung bass line. It’s got an awesome percussion groove and the guitar work is pretty damn stellar. Sure there is some serious hot dogging with the guitar riffs, but if you could do it wouldn’t you? It’s not often that a bass line gets as much attention as this one does, so good on you for that. I gotta say the combination of fiery licks, a fat ass bass line and the drum track from hell all come together to make this song a winner.

I’m fascinated with this band. Despite the lack of lyrics I find it to be a very visual song. I can see this being used in a soundtrack for every thing from car chases to “oh no the killer is going to get me” scenes. I would love to pair this up with some Avenged Sevenfold and Agony In The Garden. Not because these bands are known for their instrumental works, but more the overall tone of their music. Metal fans should really make sure they check this band out.

Kilo Fresh – The Run Down Pt. 2

This song has a good flow going for it. Kilo has a great voice and makes no apology for his work. While his lyrics are harsh and raw the musical composition is a slow tempo, mellow style. I can’t quite tell if we are listening to synth music but regardless I do like the lilting quality of the music. It brings a bit of softness to what is otherwise a rather hard song.

I’m finding it difficult to connect with the lyrics because this just isn’t my life’s experience. I did like the reference to the Cosby’s, it gave me a good little giggle. In all honesty the story Kilo is telling me scares the hell outta me. I can’t say this is going on my playlist. Not because it wasn’t a good rap song, in fact I intend to share this track (as usual) with my rap friends. I’m interested to hear some other perspectives on this track.

Anthony Stewart Head – Behind Blue Eyes

So one again I find myself in a position where I feel I need to give you a disclaimer before the review. I am very familiar with Anthony’s music and have been for a while. I was first introduced to his vocals on BTVS (doing a cover of this very song and Once More With Feeling) then via Youtube videos of his stint as Frank N Furter in Rocky all the way up to Repo! The Genetic Opera. I love his voice quite a lot so getting to do this review with his blessing is a real treat for me.

If youre expecting a note by note cover of The Who’s song you may be disappointing. This is a cover that was inspired by the original and it’s beautiful. Head’s vocals treat these lyrics like they are his life’s story. To me that is what makes this cover as perfect as it is. I’ve heard plenty of covers that were good, but the artists didn’t really make it their own. Anthony didn’t have that problem at all. I am in love with his added runs and drops. The emotion that he sings with is almost more than I can take. He has a great range and with the piano accompaniment this song has such a powerful punch that you have to listen to it to really understand what’s happening.

OK, so I totally expected this to be like the cover he did on Buffy. I was happily surprised by the modifications to the original arrangement. Singing it with a single piano was nothing short of brilliant. I need to get a copy of this song to put on my phone so I can take it with me and share it with the world. Scoff if you want but prior to this my favorite cover of this song was done by Limp Bizkit. In that case I really felt Durst was able to really dig and emotionally connect with the song, turning out a superior song. I have to say that Anthony Stewart Head’s interpretation of the song was a beautiful surprise, taking the song in directions I’d never thought of.

Anthony Stewart Head was born on February 20, 1954 in Camden Town, north London, England. Anthony is an English actor and musician. Having already had a successful career, with regular TV appearances and stage roles, including leads at the Royal National Theatre, he became “a household face” in the UK following his role in the, now classic, commercials for Nescafé Gold Blend (Taster’s Choice in the U.S.). He is internationally known for his roles as Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Uther Pendragon in Merlin, and for his role as Geoffrey Howe in the Oscar award winning film, The Iron Lady. He has also been attached to a number of other successful TV series: Little Britain, Dr. Who and Manchild. He was most recently seen in Stephen Poliakoff’s,
