Lucid Rapture – Comet

Regular readers of this site know I’m not a huge Rap/Hip-Hop fan, I am however a huge fan of any one who is willing to put themselves out there like Lucid Rapture has. Comet is an interesting read more

Random AKA MegaRan – Best Friends

I love the positive nature of this track! I am really grooving on the flow and Random’s vocal style. I’ve listened to a lot of rap songs here on the site, but this is one of the few that I feel like there is a solid connection between Random and the vocals. It’s got a lot of bounce. He can come over and raid my fridge any time, just do a little rap for me first! Not a lot of songs like this leave me with a smile on my face. As a huge plus this is a song you can play around the kiddo’s and not have to worry about them singing it. Musically, yeah it’s got some synth style to it. I know I complain about that a lot but I think it works here. It feels really playful behind Random’s rap.

So I love this song. I want to send this to my best friends because I think they would love it as well. I want to have this on my server and my phone. I need to put together a list of songs that just kinda make me happy. This one would probably be one of the first songs I would put on the list. I’m talking about every thing from the song “Happy” to “Uptown Funk” and “Word Crimes”. Hey they all put a smile on my face and a bounce in my step just like this song does!

Killezzy – No Emotion

I really like the R&B aspects of this song. For the most part I like the lyrics. There are some parts that would prevent me from playing this around the kiddo’s. I find that is an issue for me with a lot of rap oriented songs. I have to be mindful of the language around the small ones. The vocals make me very curious because I can tell this cat can sing but they opted to use a filter on his voice. The story is really good and one I think most people can connect with on a base level. Especially that part about “I promise we gonna find a way”. I thought that was a pretty powerful message. Musically I would like to hear it with a full band. By now that should be expected from me. Now that being said I thought this one had some interesting modulations.  I get live with that because I didn’t get bored listening to it.

This one is making me wish I had more rap/R&B in my personal collection. I would listen to this when I’m by myself or with my friends. I don’t have much any thing in my stash that would really work well with a track like this. As always I’l be sharing this with some of my rap/R&B friends. I’m fairly confident that this will be well received by all of them.

Kilo Fresh – The Run Down Pt. 2

This song has a good flow going for it. Kilo has a great voice and makes no apology for his work. While his lyrics are harsh and raw the musical composition is a slow tempo, mellow style. I can’t quite tell if we are listening to synth music but regardless I do like the lilting quality of the music. It brings a bit of softness to what is otherwise a rather hard song.

I’m finding it difficult to connect with the lyrics because this just isn’t my life’s experience. I did like the reference to the Cosby’s, it gave me a good little giggle. In all honesty the story Kilo is telling me scares the hell outta me. I can’t say this is going on my playlist. Not because it wasn’t a good rap song, in fact I intend to share this track (as usual) with my rap friends. I’m interested to hear some other perspectives on this track.

WhizDumb – Shush Girl

I gotta say I like the sampling on this song. It’s a much different kind of rap than I’m used to hearing. The chorus is really nice with just a bit of harmony. The flow is nice and easy, I love that there isn’t a hard edge to this track. The lyrics tell a good story that I feel like I can connect. It had a smooth vibe to it, nothing hurried which I think is a nice change of pace for a rap track. Initially I felt kinda Rick Rolled because the voice didn’t seem to be a match for rap music, but after a minute it sounded just right. I gotta say that his vocals make me think of the lead singer from Digital Underground, Humpty Dance any one?

Overall I liked the track. I liked the sample that they used. While I can’t recall the name of the song right now (thank you cold medicine) I recognized the tune instantly. I’m not sure if I would put it on a playlist but once again it’s because I don’t really listen to rap and I would hate to be disingenuous about it. All that being said I would suggest to any rap fan that you check it out and let me know what you thought about it. I know I’m not the best rap critic so some times my reviews are a bit short.

ELTEEZY – Hood Lampin

I like the disclaimer in the beginning. It’s got a great flow and I have to say this is the first rap song I’ve heard that I was able to listen to the lyrics and not get complete turned off to the lyrics. That might be due to the disclaimer but honestly I think it’s a good story. The back beat is solid but the scaled beeps kinda throw me off just a bit. I get that it adds to the overall of the song as the harmony though. Well thought out, I was just behind the 8 ball on that aspect.

I appreciate the story that’s being told, and there was a great connection to the lyrics. I don’t see myself adding it to any of my libraries only because I’m just not into that genre. I will be sharing this with my rap loving friends because I thought it was a solid rap track. Fans of the genre should check this track out and give me your feedback in the comments section below.

Ca$h – Going Ray Rice Ft Draztik Flowz

The song has a good flow and the rhymes are tight. The backing music is a lot of fun. It’s got a lot of movement which is interesting and fun to listen to. I would say this would be a great club song.  I did like the bounce effect of this song. Regardless of personal thoughts on the genre let’s face it, if it’s good your ass is going to bounce.

I don’t want to knock this song at all as for its genre it’s really well done. However this style of rap just isn’t for me. I appreciated the opportunity to listen to it and there were aspects of the song I did like. However if you’re going to listen to it please make sure your kiddo’s aren’t around or you use headphones. This song has a lot of NSFW lyrics and deals with some grown folk business. For fans of the genre: I may not know rap well enough to properly judge it however I would suggest for the more hardcore rap fan you check out the track. The flow is really tight and his rhymes are slammin’. I could dance my ass off to the music!

Fuge – On My Way

This is a really good upbeat tempo with some nice effects going on and a rather epic feel to it.  I like the way the rap vocals are layered with a secondary track. It create some really interesting vocal bouncing effects. The flow is pretty good. I like how some of it is in a more sarcastic tone. It works really well with the lyrics of the track. I’ve always liked songs that had a good “fuck you” kind of feel to it. Cause there are days where that is exactly how you feel. Especially when your stuck in a situation you are trying to get out of.

I thought this was a fairly empowering track. It had what I considered to be some funny elements with that top end vocal rap track. After listening to it a couple of times for the review I found myself bouncing along with it. Fans of the genre are going to appreciate the flow of this one. It’s got an almost summery riding in my car kind of vibe that makes it a great car song. If your into rap you should check this one out cause I’m sure you are going to want it when you’re out with your boys.

Sleepless Wild – Stick N Stones

Dude, I couldn’t talk that fast on speed. That just amazes me how fast some of these guys can spit flow.  The music kind of annoys me a bit but only because I really want to focus on this guy’s lyrics. Sometimes I find myself being distracted by the musical composition. It’s good, don’t get me wrong. I like the guitar line, it’s got some really nice runs. But this track is all about the vocals no doubt about it. I’m calling this a rap track mostly due to the flow and absence of melody. Notice I said absence and not lack? This track lacks nothing! I’m not even a fan of rap as a whole, but this track is the real deal.

Wow, it’s so rare that I get excited about a rap track but I’m stoked about this one. That is one crazy ass flow going on. This guy has a lot to say and I find myself wanting to hear every last word of it. It’s finding songs like this one that really keeps me going. It continues to break down my own musical stereotypes on a regular basis. I really want to download this song and use it for a jumping off point to build a full on rap list. I would for sure add some Eminem to it, mostly because that’s primarily what I have and his beats would pair with Sleepless Wild rather well. I also intend to check out every song they have online.

Walt DeeZ – Ride

I like the overall message on this rap track. I agree with a fair amount of those lyrics, I can certainly feel what he’s saying. The flow is really good sometimes I can’t believe how fast rappers can spit some lyrics. I found it a bit odd (in a good way) that a portion of the music actually sounded like some ambient tunes I’ve reviewed. Well, except for this track had some drum work and most ambient has none.

As you know I’m new to rap so I always ask you keep that in mind when reading one of my rap reviews. I did like this track quite a bit. I can see myself listening to it when I’m riding around in my car running errands or taking one of those road trips I take every so often. It had a good upbeat tempo and a crazy good flow. Since I don’t listen to a lot of rap I only have a handful of songs I could put this with in a list. There is some Eminem along with some Dre and ODB. I’d put this with those and see how I feel about it.

Dan Quinn – Take Me Away

I really like the female vocal track in this rap/hip hop track. It’s the perfect foil to the male rap portions of the song. She has a really beautiful tone to her voice. The story line of the rap is one I think anyone can relate to male or female. We’ve all been here and understand the pain that comes when a relationship falls apart. Dan’s rap skills are really strong and he does it in a new way. I even like the fact that you can hear his accent from time to time. I think it’s kinda sexy like that.

As far as rap/hip hop this was a pretty good jam. I keep listening to this style of music and I admit that it’s growing on me more and more with every review. I’m not as big a fan of this track as I have been some others that I’ve reviewed but I think that might be the song itself. I would like to listen to more of Dan’s music to see if I can find a song that gives me that spark. I have a strong feeling it’s there so I will be investigating more of his work. For those who are lovers of the genre do yourself a favor and check this track out. Maybe even drop me a line and let me know what you thought of this song.

ANTHONY TUCKER – Turn Up

This is one of those rare tracks that has me lost. I’m not a fan of this type of rap due to some of its lyrics. So I’m going to try and be as objective as I can on this review.
I liked the female vocals here, it’s a nice high sweet tone that reminds me of some of the hip hop of the 80’s. The rap has a good flow, but don’t try to listen to this around your kids or at work. The flow itself is a really laid back pace. I think if I could get over some of the lyrics I would like this track a bit more.

This one was really rough for me to review. I don’t get a lot of time to listen to tunes without my kiddos around so I have to edit my playlists with that in mind. However, for those who like the genre and style. This is a great track. It’s got a good rap flow backed up a lovely songbird. It certainly sets the mood for date night after dinner and the movie, maybe a few drinks. I could see getting down with this in the background. Due to my lack of experience with this genre I would suggest you listen to the track and build your playlist with other songs you like in the same vein.

KING MEAN – BROKEN DIAMOND

I love the flow of this song. I also tend to agree with the lyrical content. Everybody wants something they can’t have. I think that’s a problem we can all connect with. This is probably one of the best raps I’ve had the privilege of listening to. It’s got some hardcore rap elements, but I wouldn’t worry about listening to this with my kids around. I appreciate that. It’s one of the reasons I tend to stay away from the genre. The flow here is amazing, the rhymes are tight and the music is a nice accompaniment to the flow. The vocals are definitely where the emphasis is.

I mentioned I wouldn’t worry about my kiddo’s being around when this song plays, so let me clarify a few things with that statement. There are some adult words used here, but I promise it’s nothing your kids haven’t heard you say before. There isn’t a lot of stuff about slappin hoe’s or drug deals or shooting people. This is what I consider an “everybody” kind of rap. We can all understand what he’s talking about no matter your socioeconomic role. I would actually list this song with some Rise Against and Rage. Mostly due to lyrical content.

theWiggHead – DarkDays ft Psy Ceiling

I like the general flow and feeling of this song. It’s got an awesome dark vibe that is really working for me. The rap that overlays the music is a bit different from what I’ve heard before. I like the lilt to the rappers voice. Despite the overall darkness of the sound I actually found his voice to be somewhat comforting in the deep end of the pool that is the music. Initially I thought this was going to be an instrumental or maybe ambient song, however I was wrong on that one. The piano work is amazingly well done. It sets the pace for this song since there is a lack of drum work. I’m fairly confident the rest of the music is done via synth though I wouldn’t bet my left little toe on it.

Overall I liked the song. It made me rather curious about the other stuff The Wigg Head has done. I think I’ll have to check it out and see what else this guy has to offer. I’m not sure that I would download the song, but that is straight up a personal preference. I don’t really have any thing I could match it with at the moment, but in all honest I’m sure it would groove well with some other slower rap styles.
